Johann Heinrich Ernesti

Johann Heinrich Ernestine ( born March 12, 1652 King field in Rochlitz, † October 16, 1729 in Leipzig) was a Saxon philosopher, theologian, classical scholar (Latin ), and poet. He was rector of St. Thomas School and Professor of Poetry at the University of Leipzig. He gained scripture Generic notoriety through his writings to Cicero.

Life

Ernestine was born the son of the preacher Daniel Ernestine. From his father, who was rector in royal box, he received his first lessons. Later, he attended high school in Altenburg under his cousin Jacob Daniel Ernestine. Since 1670, he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig, there was 1672 bachelor and master of arts in 1674.

In 1680 he was admitted as an assessor at the Philosophical Faculty of the University. He also appeared to 1682 as Saturday preacher at the Nikolai Church. He worked from 1680 as a vice-principal, and from 1684 to 1729 as rector of the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He was the successor of Jacob Thomasius. When in 1723 the composer Johann Sebastian Bach applied for the post of cantor of St. Thomas, Ernestine was the rector office. He introduced a new school rules that allowed inter alia, school prayer in German. With 45 years has had the longest term of office of all known by name Headmaster. His successor was the influential Johann Matthias Gesner.

In addition, Ernestine was since 1691 professor of poetry at the University of Leipzig. He taught Roman poet Horace, Ovid, Juvenal and Virgil and the Neulateiner Helius Eobanus Hessus. Ernestine himself was a writer and wrote, among other things Panegyriki. His most important work was 14 Selectarum Orationum Liber (Marcus Tullius Cicero). In 1713 he became an academic decemvir.

For the memorial service after Ernesti death on October 21, 1729 in St. Paul's Church Johann Sebastian Bach composed the motet The Spirit helps our infirmities ( BWV 226). Johann Heinrich Ernestine was buried on October 24, 1729 in St. Paul's Church.

Family

Ernestine married on 12 April 1692 in Leipzig Regina Marie, the daughter of Johann Benedict Carpzov II, with whom he had six children.
