Johann Jakob Biedermann

Johann Jakob Biedermann (also Bidermann; born August 7, 1763 in Winterthur, Canton of Zurich, † April 10, 1830 in Aussersihl ( now part of Zurich ) ) was a Swiss painter, printmaker and etcher.

Life

He got his first drawing lessons with Johann Rudolf Schellenberg in Winterthur, from 1778, he was a pupil of the landscape and animal painter Heinrich Rieter in Bern. There, he worked as an art teacher and portraitist. 1783 stay in Lausanne and Geneva. The arrival of French troops in 1798 forced Biedermann to interrupt his artistic activity temporarily.

As of 1796, the representation of the main towns of the old Confederation was carried out in two series to 15 sheets. From 1801 re- study in Zurich, in 1802 in Paris and from 1802 to 1807 in Konstanz, where he painted portraits and landscapes, and was funded by Heinrich Ignaz von Wessenberg. 1807 trip to Frankfurt, from 1807 to 1814 based in Basel and again from 1814 to 1824 in Konstanz. He spent his last three years in Aussersihl, then still an independent municipality not far from Zurich. In addition to numerous oil paintings, mainly landscapes, besides genre and costume pictures, 1801 two battle pieces, Biedermann created an extensive graphic work.
