Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (* November 14, 1668 in Genoa, † November 16, 1745 in Vienna ) was one of the most important architects of Central Europe in the Age of the Baroque.

Life

Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt studied in Rome with Carlo Fontana, which should remain influential in its form language and use of certain building types for all of his work. In the earlier research, this Roman roots have always been somewhat underestimated, but it is just the church interspersed with motifs Hildebrandt got to know mediated by Fontana and through him. Even in secular Roman act, but also northern Italian experience after very clearly.

In 1701 he joined Vienna to the Office of the Imperial Hofingenieurs. In this office he was in constant competition with the first court architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. In 1720 he was raised to the peerage, and in 1723 after the death of JB Fischer von Erlach 's successor as first master builder. End of his life spent Hildebrandt at Vienna -Josefstadt in the house Schlösselgasse 12

Hildebrandt's fame as an architect is based primarily on its secular buildings. The Upper Belvedere, he created an impressive structure and influenced by the Würzburg Residence Residence building the most important of his time. Its architecture is characterized by a keen sense of body-like compositions of great ease as well as rich sculptural details.

His greatest talent is in the decoration, the facades of its buildings are molded with intricately intertwined bands to a graphic whole. In this he behaves antipodal to Fischer von Erlach, in which the architectural structure is always transparent. The silhouettes of his buildings are split into individual parts, which gives them an uneasy and maneuverable. This is called the Hildebrand Chen pavilion system, which is typical for the validity of the Belvedere Palace.

Hildebrandt's pleasing design manner has earned him a huge aftereffect, especially in Vienna gives.

1894 Hildebrandgasse in Vienna Hernals was named after him.
