Johann Martin Miller

Johann Martin Miller ( born December 3, 1750 in Jungingen, † June 21, 1814 in Ulm ) was a German theologian and writer.

Life

Miller was the son of a Protestant pastor Johann Michael Miller (1722-1774) in today Ulm district Jungingen born. At the University of Göttingen, he studied from October 15, 1770 Theology and in 1772 a co-founder of the Göttingen Hainbund. About the Hainbund he became friends with Matthias Claudius and Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock. In 1773 he accompanied Gottlob Friedrich Ernst Schönborn, 1774 Klopstock from Göttingen to Kassel. 1774/75 he studied in Leipzig.

Miller wrote songs in folk style, often set to music, including by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Hans Adolph Friedrich von Eschstruth, including What I'm asking a lot of money and property, if I am satisfied. 1776, he published the novel " Siegwart, a history of the monastery ," the biggest sensation after Werther and a bestseller. 1776-77 correspondence Dreyer Academic Friends, a novel in letter form, " an example of the diversity of intellectual currents ... in the Age of Enlightenment, where in addition to the advocates of the unrestricted use of reason and intellect were those who were interested in the development and appreciation of the mental powers, and also for the maintenance of the fixed dogmas in the Christian religion inserting ". After his studies, Miller worked in Ulm, in the vicinity of Ulm in 1780 as pastor, from 1781 as a professor at the Ulm School, from 1783 as a cathedral preacher. In 1804 he was Consistory, 1809 Districtsdecan 1810 spiritual counsel and decane for Ulm.

Miller was in the box the Golden Circle in Göttingen Freemasons on October 13, 1774. He was promoted to this lodge on December 11, 1776 journeymen. 1775 elevated him to the lodge golden ball in Hamburg during a visit to the Master. He is a long time been speaker of the Lodge Astraea to the three elms in Ulm be ( the lodge was closed from 1795 to 1807 ).

Johann Martin Miller died at the age of 64 years on June 21, 1814 in Ulm. His grandson was the lawyer Adolf von Miller.
