Johann Michael Sailer

Johann Michael Sailer, 1826 by Sailer ( born November 17 1751 Aresing, Upper Bavaria, † May 20, 1832 in Regensburg ) was a Catholic theologian (particularly pastoral theologian ) and Bishop of Regensburg.

Life

As the son of a shoemaker, he made his 1770 grammar school at the Jesuit High School Munich ( today Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich) and then started as a novice with the Jesuits ( until the dissolution in 1773 ) to study theology at the University of Ingolstadt. On September 23, 1775 he was ordained a priest in Augsburg. As a coach (from 1777) and professor of dogmatic theology (from 1780) he taught in Ingolstadt, until he was dismissed in 1781 on charges of " obscurantism ".

In 1784 he was awarded by Prince Archbishop Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony (including Augsburg ) is a professor of theology at the University of Dillingen. He was removed from office in 1794 as an alleged Illuminist of his office, a long time lived in the counts of Stolberg Wernigerode, then in Ebersberg ( Upper Bavaria). He received in 1799 again a position as professor of theology at the University of Ingolstadt, which in 1800 moved to the new Bavarian State University Landshut; Here he wrote his major works. 1810 appointed him the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and foreign member.

Sailer in 1821 first in Regensburg Cathedral Chapter, 1822 Vicar General, and Titular Bishop of Coadjutor Germanicopolis. The bishop He was ordained on October 28, 1822 from Munich Archbishop Lothar Anselm of Gebsattel. 1825 Sailer provost at the Regensburg Cathedral, and finally on October 28, 1829 Bishop of Regensburg. One of his closest associates in Regensburg was Melchior von Diepenbrock. After several strokes Sailer died 1832 in Regensburg. His grave monument in the Regensburg Cathedral was created by Konrad Eberhard and one of his major works.

Teaching

Sailer worked as an author and as a teacher. He was the founder and chief representative of an inward and thereby tolerant towards the Catholic Church and one of the pioneers of pastoral theology.

He scored Strong effects through the training of a new priest type. More than a thousand young cleric he gave during his thirty years of teaching not only his expression of Christianity, but also the ability to engage in daily life to the entire existence of the faithful entrusted to them. His students included King Ludwig I of Bavaria, the Bible translator Joseph Franz von allioli, the later Bavarian Ministerverweser and government President Johann Baptist von Zenetti, who remained a lifelong him, and Martin Boos, whose controversial in some religious circles proclamation he said yes. In 1811 he wrote to Boos in Gallneukirchen:

Significant is his translation and edition of the Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis as followers of Christ in 1794, which saw many editions up to recent times.

While composing his work on the Missa Solemnis (1820 ) Ludwig van Beethoven was in connection with Sailer.

In 1964, the high school in Dillingen, where he worked as a teacher for several years, named after him.
