Johann Michael Vogl

Johann Michael Vogl ( born August 10, 1768 in Ennsdorf in Steyr, † November 19, 1840 in Vienna ) was an Austrian singer and friend of Franz Schubert.

Background and education

The son of bourgeois Ask Johann Michael Vogl worked at the former Steyr Schiffmeister Carl Selhammer and lost his parents early. His father had bought the house of Anton Klausriegler in Ennsdorf in 1760 and got to the Fragnerei ( Greißlerei ) towards the right of citizenship. After the death of his father took a brother of the same the education of boys. He received music lessons from the tenor Strausbergerplatz and the choirmaster Kagel.

Because of his talent, he has already been used for nine years as a paid soprano singer at the parish church of Steyr. From 1781 he attended the Stiftsgymnasium in Kremsmuenster. Here he was immediately set as a choirboy, where his musical and acting skills were highly regarded by the Fathers. But he was also a good student who completed his high school education and the philosophical studies with distinction.

In 1785, he went along with Süssmayr, whom he had met in his Kremsmünsterer time to Vienna, where he first studied law and his university studies successfully completed. He also received further vocal training by the castrato Girolamo Crescentini.

Career

In 1794 with the help of Süßmayr Court opera at the Theater am Kärntnertor, where he worked as a singer, actor and even as a director, with his specialty roles in operas by Mozart and Gluck were.

Vogl, baritone, soon became one of the most notable singers and performers of opera theater, including roles as Orest in Gluck's Iphigenie auf Tauris (which was first performed in German language in Vienna in 1781 ), Almaviva in Mozart's Figaro, Jacob Fribourg in Switzerland Family and Daniel in Baal 's fall from Joseph Weigl or as Telasko in Fernand Cortez by Gaspare Spontini.

As the opera theater joined the tenant, he went in 1821 into retirement. By Franz von Schober, a friend of Franz Schubert, he learned this in 1817 and was fascinated by its familiar songs. There ensued probably a kind of friendship, in spite of a good thirty year age difference the Vogl Schubert had anticipated. Vogl was instrumental in the spread of Schubert's songs, organized performances and concert tours. He sang the songs of Schubert, who accompanied him to an inimitable way on the piano, which made him next to his student Carl von Schönstein one of the best contemporary Schubert interpreters. After Schubert's death (1828 ) he took care of his estate and brought out the cycle The Beautiful Miller, he himself continued the other songs of the composer. The Linz Musikverein appointed Franz Schubert and Johann Michael Vogl honorary members.

Private

A severe gout was noticeable as early as 1814, which he kept his energy notwithstanding. He married late, in 1826 the 32 years younger Gwendolyn Rosa ( daughter of the former director of the Belvedere Gallery ), with whom he had a daughter and died on the day exactly 12 years after Franz Schubert.
