Johann Nikolaus Hanff

Johann Nicolaus (also: Nicholas) Hanff ( born September 25, 1663 Gossel, † Christmas in 1711 in Schleswig ) was a German organist and composer of the North German organ school.

Life

About Hanffs life are known only to little details. He grew up in the Thuringian Wechmar. Is Reported that he was a music teacher in Hamburg and several bodies held as a church musician. One of his students was the then seven -year-old Johann Mattheson, then for four years with him composition and piano learned. Until 1696 Hanff was organist at the court of the Prince-Bishop Eutiner of Lübeck.

After the death of Bishop August Friedrich and the resolution of the court in 1705 Hanff probably returned back to Hamburg, where his 1706 and 1711 two children were born. On August 26, 1711, he assumed the position of organist at the Schleswig Cathedral, but died a few months later.
