Johann Pfeffinger

John Pfeffinger (* December 27 1493 in Wasserburg am Inn, † January 1, 1573 in Leipzig ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer.

Life

After attending grammar school in Annaberg 1499 Pfeffinger was consecrated in 1518 and 1515 Acolyte sub-deacon in Salzburg. In the spring of 1518 he was ordained a priest. In the next few years until 1521, he was a preacher in Reichenhall, Saalfelden and pen preacher in Passau.

In 1523 he was suspected of heresy because of sympathies for Lutheranism and fled to Wittenberg, where he matriculated on 15 November 1524. From 1527-1530, he oversaw his first pastorate in the Sun ( s) forest as an evangelical preacher. In 1528, he married Elisabeth cooling stone. Two years later he was expelled by the Bishop of Meissen, and the preachers took place at the electoral monastery Eicha at Naunhof. Johann Pfeffinger was then pastor in 1532 Belgern and participated in the introduction of the Reformation in Leipzig.

1539, on Whit Tuesday he held there the first Protestant sermon in St. Nicholas' Church. A year later, on August 24, 1540, he became superintendent of Leipzig, reaching at the University in 1541 the degree of Bachelor. He now held numerous exegetical lectures and preaching, so also in Glauchau with the mission to carry out the Reformation in Schönburger rule. In the fall of 1543 he reached the degree of licentiate and doctorate at October 10, 1543 for the first Doctor of Theology at the University of Leipzig. Half a year later, he began on March 10, 1544 his work as a university professor. In his lectures he dealt mainly with Melanchthon's Loci communes.

With the 1555 published thesis that man WOULD together with his conversion with the Holy Spirit, Johann Pfeffinger triggered the synergistic controversy ( 1555-1560 ). This also explains his theology today's historical significance. Besides Johann Pfeffinger is known as the author of the widely used "comfort booklet " which he had initially put together for themselves to cope with the death of his deceased son.

In Leipzig -Connewitz the Pfeffingerstrasse is named after the reformer.
