Johann Rudolf Kutschker

Johann Baptist Kutschker Rudolf ( born April 11, 1810 in Meadow, Austrian Silesia, † 27 January 1881 in Vienna) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna and a cardinal.

Life

From 1821 he attended high school in Opava, from 1826, he studied philosophy in Olomouc ( Czech: Olomouc ) and 1828 Catholic theology at Frintaneum in Vienna. He was ordained priest on 21 April 1833.

1834 doctorate Johann Rudolf Kutschker to Dr. theol. with a dissertation on mixed marriages. From 1835 to 1852 he taught moral theology at the University of Olomouc. In 1852 he was appointed Imperial Court and Castle pastor in Vienna. From 1857 to 1876 he was a ministerial official in the Ministry of Culture and Education. In 1861 he was appointed provost and 1862 Vicar General and Auxiliary Bishop of Vienna. The bishop He was ordained on May 11, 1862 from Vienna Archbishop Joseph Othmar Rauscher. After Rauscher's death took place on January 12, 1876 Kutschkers appointment as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna and on 22 June 1877, the elevation to cardinal with the title of the Church by Pope Pius IX Sant'Eusebio.

He agreed to the transfer in 1880 of the Archbishop minor seminary from Vienna to Oberhollabrunn.

Johann Rudolf Kutschker was a renowned moral theologian and expert on canon law. He took a middle position between conservatives and liberals. For his support of the Liberal Constitutional Party in the mansion he has been heavily criticized. However, its moderate liberal approach had the advantage that the Kulturkampf in Austria remained fairly mild, in German dioceses, such as Cologne, major conflicts erupted.

He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold.

He is buried in the crypt of St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral.

The Kutschkergasse with a daily market ( Kutschkermarkt ) in Vienna's Waehring is named after him.
