Johann Schop

Johann Schop (* 1590 in Hamburg, † summer 1667 in Hamburg ) was a German musician and composer.

Life

Schop was probably born around 1590 in Hamburg. In 1614 he became a musician at the Wolfenbüttel court orchestra, where he played the violin, lute, trumpet and zinc. 1615 he went to Copenhagen and performed at the royal court of Christian IV, from where he fled in 1619 but due to the spreading plague. In Hamburg, he became a member of the Council of Music, 1621 Finally, its director and urban Kapellmeister. Later he worked as organist at St. Jacobi Church.

For the wedding of Christian, the Crown Prince of Denmark and Norway, he traveled in 1634, along with Heinrich Schütz, in turn, to Copenhagen. The trial of the king, Schop retrieve permanently to Copenhagen failed. Schop died in the summer of 1667 in Hamburg.

Schop had two sons, John (* 1626 ) and Albert (* 1632), the musicians were also.

Johann Schop was one of the first known German violin virtuoso. Its popularity beamed even beyond the city limits of Hamburg. District of Hamburg Eimsbuettel a street was named after him.
