Johann Speth

Johann Speth ( born November 9, 1664 Speinshart, Upper Palatinate; † after 1719) was a German organist.

Life

Johann Speth well received organ lessons from his father and was trained in music and Boys' Choir School of the Premonstratensian monastery of his hometown. 1692 he applied for the post of organist in Augsburg. But he put his collection " Ars Magna et Consoni Dissoni ". That is: Organic Instrumental Art Ornamental and pleasure gardens ", which contains 10 toccatas, 8 Magnificat and 3 Partitas ( sets of variations ). Speth was given the job, which he had to fulfill tasks in the office of the chapter. The pieces were " bey Lorenz Kroninger and Gottl. Goebels seel. Heirs " published and printed in Lotter. The title may be an allusion to the 1650 published musicological work of Athanasius Kircher. Speth's organ works can certainly be put on a par with the best in this time in Southern Germany. They clearly show influence of the then popular in Augsburg Italian style ( Venetian school, Frescobaldi ).
