Johann Theile

Johann Theile ( born July 29, 1646 Naumburg ( Saale), † June 22, 1724 ) was a German composer and conductor. Theiles compositional works include musical comedies, operas, masses, psalms, passions, arias and canzonettas, sonatas, and motets. In addition, he has written music-theoretical writings, especially the counterpoint.

Life

After studying law in Leipzig and Halle, he took lessons in composition teaching in Weissenfels. His teacher here was Heinrich Schütz; Part is considered to be one of his last students. In Lübeck in 1673 was his St. Matthew Passion. 2008 in the Public Library of Lübeck Portrait of a part was discovered.

In Stettin and Lubeck, he was employed as an organist. He also had an outstanding reputation as a music teacher and teacher. Part of itself, so it handed Johann Mattheson, Dieterich Buxtehude saw (which was, however, nine years older and died long before the parts ) as his most important students.

In the years 1673-1678 he held the position of court Kapellmeister at Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp. 1677 operas were performed in the refectory of the Hamburg Cathedral. With his musical comedy Adam and Eve, the opera was in Hamburg at the goose market a year later - the first civic opera house in Germany - opened.

Between 1685 and 1689 he held the position of Kapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel; here he succeeds by Johann Müller Rose. Further stations of his work was at the opera in Naumburg and Christian I. (Sachsen- Merseburg ). After Berlin - here he worked as a music teacher - he returned in 1694 as musical advisor of the Duke of Zeitz, Moritz Wilhelm ( Saxony- Zeitz ), back to his hometown.
