Johann Wilhelm Schirmer

Johann Wilhelm Schirmer ( born September 7, 1807 in Jülich, † September 11, 1863 in Karlsruhe ) was a German landscape painter and printmaker.

Life and artistic development

Between 1821 and 1824 Schirmer graduated from a bookbinder in his father's workshop. In addition, he began with autodidactic studies in painting and attended since 1826, the Dusseldorf Art Academy. There he became a student of Wilhelm von Schadow and Heinrich Kolbe. Under the influence of Carl Friedrich Lessing Schirmer trained as a landscape painter.

Since 1834 as an assistant teacher and in 1839 a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Schirmer was next to Lessing the principal founder of the Dusseldorf School of landscape painting. A trip to Normandy in 1838 prompted him to leave the course taken by him toward a more applied to the drawing weight representation and to increase the emphasis on color and sound effect. Expression of this style change were pictures like " Autumn Landscape ", " Wetterhorn " or " Jungfrau in Switzerland ". His trip to Italy in 1840 led him into the more stylized and idealized direction of landscape painting, often with biblical motifs. In 1841 he married Emilie Bard of life.

In 1854 he was appointed by the Prince Regent and later Grand Duke Friedrich I as the first director of the newly established School of Art in Karlsruhe. It was here Schirmer, among other things as a teacher of Hans Thoma, Rudolf Epp and Anton von Werner.

In his late work outweigh religious themes, while his last pictures belong to any particular direction more. You are the general term for moods or thoughts and show almost an impressionistic style.

Schirmer's oeuvre of prints, approximately 30 sheets, is little known and scientifically processed. In his youth until in the 1840s it was for the artist of great importance. He preferred the etching, but also dealt with the lithograph. 1829 originated in Dusseldorf his first etching the praying nun. In 1847 his folio work was published eight original etchings of landscapes, which consists of leaves of different ages.

Johann Wilhelm Schirmer is as important German landscape painter to rediscover again, which called for some exhibitions in the last few years with emphasis.
