Johann Wolfgang Franck

Johann Wolfgang Franck ( baptized on 17 June 1644 Unterschwaningen, Middle Franconia, † 1710 in London ) was a German conductor, choirmaster and composer.

Life and work

Johann Wolfgang Franck worked from 1673 to 1679 as Kapellmeister in Ansbach. After he had killed the court musician Ulbrecht on January 17, 1679, out of jealousy, he fled to Hamburg. Here he first composed several "Spiritual singing games" for opera at the goose market. From 1682 to 1685 he held the post of Domkantors. From 1690 he lived in London. Together with Robert King, he joined initially as concert promoters ( 1690-1693 ) and then worked only as a composer. Best known is the Franck today is completely preserved as a composer of the first German opera, "The daughters of Cecrops drey " ( 1679 )

In addition to several operas he created songs (especially for the concerts in London), cantatas and numerous hymnal melodies.
