Johannes (Archbishop of Uppsala)

Johan ( † 14 July or August 12, 1187 ) was from 1185 to 1187 Archbishop of Uppsala.

About his person is as good as nothing is known. Apparently there were in Old Uppsala already a cathedral chapter, the bishop claimed the choice for themselves. This is indicated by the designation " electio canonical " in the appointment of Pope Lucius III bull. from November 5, 1185 back, which includes a letter of protection for him and his church. It is the oldest surviving bull for Sweden. They also ordered the tax exemption for the church. During a see is vacant, the revenues of the Church were not to be diminished. This was against the custom of that income during a Sedisvakanz obeyed the king.

1187 undertook a raid by Estonian pirates Mälaren. On the way back from Sigtuna, which had been burned down, the Estonian ships not (the largest castle ruins in Sweden today ) came to the defense plant in Lake Mälaren Almarestäket past, where the archbishop who happened. The Estonians dug west of Stäkesön one again today backfilled Sund ( there today leads the E 18 over), which was later called " Lilla Stäket " or " Ryssgraven ". In the course of the fighting, the archbishop was killed on July 14 or August 12, 1187. He was the first archbishop, who was buried in the cathedral of Gamla Uppsala.
