Johannes Baptista Montanus

Johannes Baptista Montanus (also: Giovanni Battista Monte, Gian Battista Da Monte) (* 1498 in Verona, † May 6, 1551 ) was a professor at the University of Ferrara and Padua, he is regarded as the " second Galen ".

He was a fellow student and friend of Andreas Vesalius.

Montanus established clinical medicine. He was the first in Europe, medicine and diagnosis in the presence of patients taught and given first in the Hospital of San Francesco in Padua clinical teaching.

Montanus led the autopsy one as a means to acquire medical knowledge in anatomy in particular. For this, the first permanent anatomical theater was established later ( in the 90s of the 16th century ) by Girolamo Fabrizio ( Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente ).

He gave Galen, Rhazes and Avicenna's writings out in various editions and founded in 1545 the first university botanical garden.
