Johannes Caioni

Kájoni János (John Kájoni, Ioan Caianu, Kájoni János; born March 8, 1629 in Jegenye, Romanian Leghia; . † April 25, 1687 in Gyergyószárhegy, rum Lazarea ) was a Romanian Franciscan monk, composer, organ builder and printer.

Kájoni moved in 1648 from the Orthodox faith to Catholicism and in 1650 a Franciscan monk. He was Franciscan Guardian and in 1678 by Pope Innocent XI. appointed Vicar General of Transylvania.

In his organ tablatures, he provided numerous hymns, folk songs and folk dances. The Organo Missale contains fairs and litanies, including his own compositions.

Codex Caioni

The Codex Caioni was long believed lost until 1988 he was rediscovered, monks had immured the collection at the approach of Soviet troops at the end of the Second World War. Originating from the 17th century Codex is an originally created for personal use collection of secular and sacred works by contemporary composers from the Italian and German speaking countries, but also includes popular Romanian and Hungarian use music.
