Johannes Franz Hartmann

Johannes Franz Hartmann ( born January 11, 1865 in Erfurt, † September 13, 1936 in Göttingen ) was a German astronomer.

Life

Hartmann studied in Tübingen, Berlin and Leipzig. During his studies he became a member of the Catholic Student Association AV Guestfalia Tübingen in the CV. In 1891 he was awarded his doctorate in 1893 and went to the private observatory of Moritz von Kuffner, where he worked as an assistant.

In 1894 he returned to Leipzig and was from 1896 at the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam operates. 1902 Hartmann was appointed professor there. From 1909 to 1921 he worked as a professor at the University of Göttingen and director of the observatory in Göttingen. In 1921 he moved because of better observing conditions as director of the Argentine National Observatory in La Plata, Argentina. Seriously ill, he returned in 1934 to Göttingen where he died two years later.

Hartmann was mainly concerned with star spectroscopy. When observing the double star Delta Orionis he found it first indications of interstellar matter. He discovered during his time in Argentina, the three asteroids ( 965 ) Angelica ( 1029 ) and La Plata ( 1254 ) Erfordia.
