John Galliculus ( Alectorius, Hähnel, Hennel ) (* 1490 in Dresden, † 1550 in Leipzig ) was a German music theorist and composer.

Life

About his life little is known, in 1505 he was enrolled under the name Hennel at the University of Leipzig and then there was probably more active. Around 1520 he became a follower of the ideas of Martin Luther and was in proportion to the circle of the music theorist and book printer Georg Rhau. In this district also compositions and music collections appeared in print.

In addition to his theoretical works in which it came to the adaptation of the Latin Mass and musically to the requirements of the Reformation, he wrote two masses, motets and Magnificat and other sacred compositions. Significant is his Markuspassion, an important work of early German Protestant music. He is the successor of Heinrich Isaac.
