Johannes Jakob Buxtorf

Johann Jakob Buxtorf ( born September 4, 1645 Basel, † April 4, 1704 in Basel) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and orientalist.

He was the son of Johann the Younger Buxtorf and studied from 1659 in Basel theology. 1664 received after the death of his father, the vacant chair of the Hebrew Language at the University of Basel. However, he was on leave immediately and made from 1665 to 1669 a study tour of France, the Netherlands, England and Germany. After his return he again worked at the University of Basel, of which he was twice as rector.

Buxtorf gave his grandfather Johann Buxtorf writings out to the elders, but hardly published his own works. In his hand- written estate, there are numerous translations of rabbinic writings. His library was acquired by the University Library of Basel.

Successor to the chair of Hebrew language was his nephew Johann Buxtorf.
