Johannes Lippius

John Lippius (* June 24, 1585 in Strasbourg, † September 24, 1612 in Speyer ) was a German Protestant theologian, philosopher, and music theorist.

Life

John Lippius was the son of the pastor of the Protestant Church of St. Peter since 1529 in Strasbourg Lippius John ( 1554-1622 ) and his wife Susanna Klehmann. He had received training in the languages ​​and the seven liberal arts already in his early youth, so that he has been appointed in his early years at the University of Strasbourg for Master of Arts. Up to twenty-one he had held private lectures and classes at the University, then entered the University of Leipzig, 1606, the University of Wittenberg, the University of Frankfurt (Oder), the University of Jena, where he was an adjunct of the philosophical faculty, and the University of Erfurt.

All institutions he had devoted himself to theological studies and had also kept itself lectures in the philosophical sciences. After a short stay at the court in Weimar, he went on universities Altdorf, Ingolstadt and Tübingen back to his hometown. There he was appointed in place of Philip Marbach (1550-1611) as professor of theology. At the completion of his doctorate in theology, he went to the University of Giessen. After completing his PhD at August 28, 1612 he wanted to go back to Strasbourg, but he fell ill during the return trip to Speyer on a violent fever and died. His body was buried on 25 September in Speyer.

Even before his untimely death, Lippius had acquired a reputation of a philosopher and music theorist. He tried to bring above all the philosophical topics in his compositions. So he himself has become the pioneer of modern harmony.
