Johannes Meursius

Johannes van Meurs ( born February 9, 1579 at Loosduinen Hague, † September 20, 1639 in Soro, Johann or Johannes Meursius ) was a Dutch classical scholar and historian. He was the father of the philologist John Meursius ( 1613-1653/1654 ). The French lawyer and writer Nicolas Chorier used Meurs name as a pseudonym.

Life

Johannes van Meurs traveled as leader of the sons of the Grand Pensionary Barnefeld a large part of Europe, was professor of history and Greek language at the University of Leiden 1610 historiographer of Holland, and later royal Danish historiographer.

His last place of action was the Soro Akademi, where he taught history and politics.
