Johannes Moller

Johannes Moller (* February 17, 1661 in Flensburg, † October 2, 1725 in Flensburg ) was a German teacher, writer and literary historian. His main work is the Dictionary of Cimbria literata.

Life and work

Moller was born the son of the pastor Claus Moller in Flensburg. After attending grammar school in Flensburg, he studied in Kiel and Leipzip theology, philosophy and history. He stayed on in Hamburg 1681-1684 and 1684-85 in Copenhagen, among other things to research there. 1685 Teacher of the Quinta at the Latin School, today Altes Gymnasium in Flensburg. He rose to the college until he was rector in 1701. He founded in 1711 the library of the school, which increased to 1725 to 1300 volumes. Despite several calls to universities remained until his death in Flensburg.

Moller's main interest was in addition to the school work of literature and personal history, which he collected material since his youth. His main work is Cimbria literata immersive Scriptorum Ducatus utriusque Slesvicensis et Holsatici, quibus et alii vicini quidam accensentur, historia literaria tripartita, a comprehensive Dictionary of Schleswig -Holstein, Hamburg and Lübeck, which comprises three folio volumes, and in 1744 by Olaus Heinrich Moller on preliminary work his father were issued. It is still an important source of personal and literary history of Schleswig-Holstein in the 16th and 17th century. Moller was married to Anna Stricker ( 1677-1743 ).
