Johannes Roth

John Rudolf Roth ( born September 4, 1815 in Munich, † June 26, 1858 in Hasbeya at Mount Hermon, Lebanon ) was a German zoologist and explorer.

Family

Roth was the son of the lawyer and Royal Bavarian State Council and Oberkonsistorialpräsidenten Friedrich von Roth (1780-1852) and Katharina Merkel ( 1792-1842 ).

Life

In his hometown, he studied at the University of Munich, the fields of medicine and science.

His teacher Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert (1780-1860), he accompanied 1836/1837 on the research trip to Egypt and Palestine. From 1839 he traveled to the East Indies and the northern west coast of Africa for the purpose of scientific research. In the years 1841/1842 he lived in Djibouti.

In 1843 he became professor of zoology at the University of Munich. In 1852 he undertook a second and a third trip to Palestine in 1856. On this last trip, he died almost 37 years in Hasbeya.
