Johannes Rydberg

Johannes Robert Rydberg ( born November 8, 1854 in Halmstad, † December 28, 1919 in Lund ) also known as Janne Rydberg, was a Swedish physicist mainly known for the preparation of the Rydberg formula. They are to the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation that emits an electron in an atom of the transition between two energy levels.

A physical constant, the Rydberg constant, named after him. Excited atoms with very high values ​​of the principal quantum number n are called Rydberg atoms, the study of such Rydberg states is sometimes called " Rydberg physics ". In recognition of his services a crater of the moon is named after Rydberg.

At the University of Lund, he spent his entire academic life.
