Johannes Thomas

John Thomas ( born September 11, 1949 in Dresden ) is a retired rower from the GDR. In 1976 he won the Olympic silver medal in the coxed four.

John Thomas steered from 1970 to four of the SC Einheit Dresden under coach Hans Eckstein. With the quad Thomas took third place in the East German Rowing Championships 1970. After the second place 1971, the foursome won the East German championship in 1972. From 1973 to 1975, Thomas steered the Dresdner roller and the second four of the club. For the Olympic Games 1976, Thomas returned to the first four Dresden, who had become with Wolfgang Great as helmsman 1974 world champion. In Montreal, Thomas steered the boat with Ullrich Diessner, Walter Diessner, Ruediger Kunze and Andreas Schulz for second place behind the boat from the Soviet Union. In the same year he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

John Thomas is a trained chef. After studying at the School for gastronomy and hotel business in Leipzig Thomas worked in a senior position at Mitropa in Dresden. After the turn he worked at Mitropa - successor operation in logistics. His daughter Christina was coxswain of the German women's rowing eight, who won at the Junior World Championships in Hazewinkel / Belgium in 1997.
