Johannes van den Bosch

Johannes Graf van den Bosch ( born February 2, 1780 at Herwynen Bommel in Geldern, † January 28, 1844 in The Hague) was a Dutch Lieutenant-General and Governor-General of Dutch East Indies. He came from the Rotterdam Family Van den Bosch.

Biography

In 1797, Van den Bosch came as a lieutenant to Java, where he quickly ascended to colonel. He disagreed with the Governor-General Daendels in 1810 he took the leave. On his return to Holland in November 1813, he campaigned for the restitution of the House of Orange.

When Colonel again employed in the army, he became in 1815 commander of Maastricht and afterwards major general. He founded the Society of reasons for the poor colonies and especially the colony Frederiksoord (see the description in Baedeker ). In 1823 he married Elisabeth Wilhelmine Rudolfine of Stürler (1790 - ), daughter of the Dutch officer Rudolf Gabriel of Stürler and Daniella Daniella Elisabeth van Oosterhoudt.

In 1827 he was sent as Commissioner-General again to Batavia, where he became governor in 1830. 1835 returned, he took over the ministry of the colonies, but in 1839 resigned voluntarily and was elevated to the rank of count. He died on January 28, 1844 on his estate at The Hague.

In 1835 he was elected a member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina.
