Johannes von Goch

John of Goch (* 1410 in Goch, † March 28, 1475 in Tabor, in Mechelen, also called Johann von Mechelen, Johann Pupper ) was a late medieval theologian and church reformer is considered.

He founded in 1451 the Augustinian priory Canonissen Thabor in Mechelen.

His works have been published from 1520 by Cornelius Grapheus and counted among the pre-Reformation writings. Starting from Augustine, he was close to the ideas of devotio moderna, nominalism and the Brethren of the Common Life and criticized the idea of justification by works ( meritum de condigno ) for the benefit of a dependent of God's free acceptance equity earnings ( meritum de congruo ). His theology has been, " From God, through God to God " characterized in the phrase.
