Johannes von Hanstein

Johannes Ludwig Emil Robert von Hanstein ( born May 15, 1822 in Potsdam, † August 27, 1880 in Bonn ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hanst. ".

Life and work

Johannes von Hanstein learned the nursery; 1840-44 he attended the gardener College in Potsdam. Then he studied in Berlin science and a doctorate in 1848. He taught at several schools in Berlin and habilitated in 1855 as lecturer in botany at the University of Berlin. In 1861 he was curator at the Royal Herbarium, 1865 Professor of Botany in Bonn and director of the botanical garden and the botanical institute.

The botanist worked primarily in the field of microscopic anatomy and morphology of plants and explored the Embryonic Development of mono- and dicotyledonous flowering plants. He also wrote works for fertilization and development of ferns.

He married in 1857 Helen ( 1834-1890 ), daughter of Julie and Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg. They had three sons, including the writer Adalbert and Otfrid.

Ehrentaxon

The plant genus Hansteinia Oerst. the Acanthaceae family of plants ( Acanthaceae ) has been named after him.

Johannes von Hanstein provided important work on the anatomy and morphology of plants and wrote:

  • Experiments on the line of the sap through the bark (Berlin 1860);
  • The milky sap vessels and related organs of the cortex (Berlin 1864);
  • For evolutionary history of the genus Marsilia (Berlin 1862-64, 2 vols );
  • Fertilization and development of the genus Marsilia (Berlin 1865);
  • Pilulariae globuliterae generatio cum Marsilia Comparata (Bonn, 1866 );
  • Overview of natural plant system ( Bonn 1867);
  • About the organs of the resin and mucus secretion in the leaf buds ( Botanical newspaper 1868);
  • The peak cell group in the growing point of phanerogams (Bonn, 1869);
  • The development of the embryo of monocots and dicots (1870 ),
  • The parthenogenesis of Caelebogyne ilicifolia: After jointly with Alexander Brown employed observations communicated. Bonn, 1877.
  • Some features of the biology of the protoplasm (1880 ) and
  • Contributions to the general morphology of plants (1882 ) in which he edited anthology papers from the field of morphology and physiology; also
  • Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, a day's work in the field of natural science (Bonn 1877).
