Johannes W. Rohen

Wolfgang Johannes Rohen ( born September 18, 1921 in Münster ( Westphalia ) ) is a German anatomist.

Life

From 1940 to 1946 studied Rohen medicine at the Universities of Cologne, Freiburg, Wroclaw and Gdansk.

After graduating in 1946 from the University of Tübingen and the doctorate in the same place a year later, he assisted as an assistant physician at various hospitals. In 1953 he qualified as a professor in anatomy and embryology at the anatomical institute of the University of Mainz and worked then as an assistant.

In 1963 he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Giessen and the following year to the chair of anatomy at the University of Marburg.

In 1974 moved Raw to the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg and was there until 1991 held the Chair of Anatomy and Head of the Institute of Anatomy. With more than 90 years, he still holds the traditional introductory course for students of human medicine in Erlangen.

His research stays have taken him from 1959 to 1960 at the Department of Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis and later a few months at the Anatomical Institute of Ahwaz (Iran) and Kampala (Uganda). They extended his scientific experience, particularly in the areas of eye and aging research.

Awards

For his achievements in glaucoma research, he received one of the few times the highly doped Alcon Research Award, the Albrecht von Graefe Prize of the German Ophthalmological Society, in which he is an honorary member, at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg and an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala. In 2007 he was honored along with Elke Lütjen - Drecoll with the Helen Keller Prize for Vision Research in Lauderdale (USA). Raw 2012 received the Anton- Waldeyer price. Rohen is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature and an honorary member of the Italian Society of Anatomy.
