Johannes Zwick

Johannes Zwick (* 1496 in Konstanz, † October 23, 1542 in Bischofszell ( Thurgau ) of the plague ) was a German theologian and jurist who was known as a reformer and hymns poet.

Life

Zwick studied law and theology in Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau. After his ordination in 1518 and the Doctorate in Law. In 1520 he worked briefly as a professor at the University of Basel, but moved in 1522 to a parish in Riedlingen / Danube. There he preached soon reformatory way, which is why he was expelled in 1525 and returned to his hometown.

As a pastor in Konstanz he led, together with his cousins ​​Ambrose and Thomas Blarer by the Reformation and has written for the instruction of youth faith interpretations, songs and prayers. Through the first Constance Hymnal 1533/34, mainly by the " New Gsangbüchle " Zurich in 1540 with his preface, he became a pioneer of church singing in the Upper German -Swiss space. As followers of Huldrych Zwingli's doctrine of the Eucharist, he rejected the only clergyman Constance from the Wittenberg Concord of 1536.
