John 'Mad Jack' Fuller

John Fuller ( born February 20, 1757 North Stoneham, Hampshire, † April 11, 1834 in London ) was an English businessman, politician and patron of the arts and sciences. He was the founder of the Fuller professor and the Fuller medal of the Royal Institution of Great Britain as well as supporters of William Turner.

Life and work

John Fuller was the third child of Rev. Henry Fuller (1713-1761) and his wife Frances Fuller ( 1725/6-1778 ). He came from an important family of iron masters in Sussex, which included a vast sugar plantation in Jamaica. Fuller was trained from 1767 to 1774 at Eton College. After the death of his uncle Rose Fuller on May 7, In 1777 he inherited the family estate, and settled in the house of his deceased uncle in Brightling.

From 1780 to 1784 Fuller was Member of Parliament for Southampton 1801-1812 Sussex.

1818 lent Fuller (now about 57 637 pounds ), on the refund, he renounced the Royal Institution of Great Britain 1000 pounds later. In 1828 he founded the Fuller medal of the Royal Institution and the beginning of 1833 he stiftetet with a price of 10,000 pounds ( today about 779 492 pounds ), the Fuller Professor of Chemistry, followed by a Professor of Physiology and Comparative Anatomy a year later. The first two Fuller professors were Michael Faraday and Peter Mark Roget.

Fuller, who was considered very eccentric, was buried in an approximately 7.5 -meter-high pyramid-shaped mausoleum in the cemetery of Brightling.
