John A. Agnew

John A. Agnew ( born August 29, 1949 in Millom, England ) is a British-American geographer and university teachers.

Life

Agnew was educated at the Universities of Exeter and Liverpool in England and Ohio State University in the U.S.. From 1975 to 1995 he was a professor at Syracuse University in New York. At the University of California at Los Angeles ( UCLA) Agnew then taught about political geography, history of geography, cities in Europe and the Mediterranean. From 1998 to 2002 he headed the Department of Geography at UCLA. From 2003 to 2004 Agnew was the owner of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is currently Professor of Geography at UCLA.

The term of office 2008/2009 is John Agnew also president of the Association of American Geographers, the largest professional organization of academic geographers in the United States.

Publications

Agnew has published extensively on the topics territory, space (in the sense of living place ) and political influence forces. He is best known for his rediscovery of geopolitics as a scientific research field and for his theoretical and empirical explanations, such as the policy of a country can best be explained by the geographical dynamics of " places " and how this is determined both by local and distant realities. One of his most famous books is "Place and Politics " (1987 ), another " Geopolitics: Re - Visioning World Politics " (2003). Much of his empirical research dealing, except the United States with Italy and Greece. Other major publications of Agnew are " The Geography of the World Economy " ( co-authored with Paul Knox and Linda McCarthy, 2008 in the 5th edition appeared ), "Mastering Space" (1995, together with Stuart Corbridge ), " Hegemony: The New shape of Global Power " ( 2005) and" Berlusconi 's Italy " (2008, with Michael Shin ). Together with David Newman Agnew is the journal Geopolitics out.
