John Abernethy (surgeon)

John Abernethy ( born April 3, 1764 in London, † April 28, 1831 in Enfield ) was an English surgeon and anatomist.

Life and work

He began his training at age 15 at London's St Bartholomew's Hospital to Sir Charles looks ( 1745-1815 ). In 1787 he became assistant physician of his teacher and also began soon even to give lectures, which soon enjoyed great popularity, audience. In 1813 he became a physician at Christa's Hospital, where he remained until 1828. From 1814, he became Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeon. He was considered an excellent doctor and practitioners and was extremely popular, despite or perhaps because of its tendency to eccentricity. He was especially true as rather crude and direct in dealing, often not only with his patients. A number of anecdotes to have survived. He is said to have the following at the hand of his future wife, the daughter of a deceased patient stopped: " I have seen the dedication you have provided your mother. I need a woman and I think you would be the right person. I'm pretty busy and I have to make neither time nor leisure someone's yard. Think about the proposal until Monday. " ( According to Samuel D. Gross).

In 1796 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society.
