John Albert Johnson

John Albert Johnson ( born July 28, 1861 in St. Peter, Nicollet County, Minnesota, † September 21, 1909 in Rochester, Minnesota ) was an American politician and 1905-1909 Governor of the State of Minnesota.

Early years

John Johnson attended the public schools of his home. At the age of 13 he dropped out of school and worked in various temporary locations. Later he succeeded in entering the newspaper business. He was co-owner and editor of the newspaper " St. Peter Herald ", which was close to the Democratic Party. Johnson himself was also a member of that party.

Political career

Between 1898 and 1903 he was a member of the Minnesota Senate. On 8 November 1904 he was elected governor of his state. In 1906 and 1908 he was confirmed by the voters in this office. Johnson took office on January 4, 1905 and kept it until his death on 21 September 1909. During his tenure Insurance in Minnesota was redefined. In addition, a Tax Commission was established. The governor had to deal then with a strike in the mining industry. In the railway transport both the fares and the freight charges were reduced. In the government of Minnesota a separate department was established, which dealt with the banking industry.

In 1908, John Johnson was a Democratic presidential candidate in the interview. However, the nomination went to William Jennings Bryan. Also for the next presidential election in 1912, his name was brought into the conversation early on. However, it no longer happened. In 1909, his health deteriorated rapidly. He passed away on September 21 this year even as the governor of Minnesota. The Office was made after his death Lieutenant Governor Adolph Olson Eberhart. John Johnson was married to Elinore M. Preston.
