John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley

John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, PC ( born July 8, 1882 in Edinburgh, Scotland; † 4 January 1958) was a British politician who was not only a minister, but also Governor of Bengal.

Biography

Anderson studied post-school mathematics first and geology at the University of Edinburgh and later completed further studies in chemistry at the University of Leipzig. In 1905 he renounced but for a scientific career, but joined as an employee in the Colonial Office.

In 1920, he was the last British Under-Secretary for Ireland, in 1922 to not only chairman of the public service in Ireland, but at the same time also an advisor to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the representative of the British king in Ireland. Subsequently, he was 1922-1932 Permanent Under-Secretary at the Home Office (Home Office ).

After his ten-year career, he was there from 1932 to 1937 Governor of Bengal. After returning from India, he was a deputy in the 1938 lower house (House of Commons ) and represented there until the dissolution of the " constituency " in 1950 the interests of the Universities of Scotland.

In 1938 he was appointed Lord Privy Seal of Prime Minister Arthur Neville Chamberlain for the first time in the government and was after a cabinet reshuffle 1939-1940 Secretary.

Following the appointment of Prime Minister Winston Churchill was in 1940 he was appointed Lord President of the Council, before he was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the cabinet Churchill 1943-1945.

Anderson was not just 1919 a knighthood ( Knighthood ) awarded, but in 1952 charged with the title Viscount Waverley, of West Dean in the County of Sussex, in the hereditary nobility. Thus he was until his death a member of the House of Lords. In addition, he was a member of the Royal Society.
