John Andrews (architect)

John Hamilton Andrews ( born October 29, 1933, Sydney ) is an Australian- Canadian architect. He is an important representative of brutalism.

Life

John Andrews studied at the University of Sydney architecture and received in 1956 the degree of Bachelor. He then worked for the firm Edwards Madigan Torzillo in Sydney and graduated from Harvard University in 1958, studying architecture with the master from. In the same year, his design was to build the new city hall of Toronto in the finals, but failed against the Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Based on this success, he went to Toronto, where he participated in the execution of Revell's design. He worked in Toronto for the architectural firm JB Parkin. From 1962 to 1967, Andrews lecturer and head of the architecture department of the University of Toronto. This allowed Andrews to design the Scarborough College, a branch of the University of Toronto. The architecture of Scarborough College was an early example of sculptural concrete employed and led to international attention.

In 1968 Andrews a call, which allowed him the Gund Hall to design a new building at Harvard University, which was completed in 1972. In the same year he founded his own company, John Andrews International Pty. Ltd.. , With whom he moved back to Sydney. The most famous building of Andrews is the CN Tower, completed in 1976, which until September 2007 was the tallest free-standing structure with 553 meters. Other projects by Andrews are: the terminal of the seaport of Miami ( 1970), the Kent State University School of Art in Ohio ( 1972), the student residences of the University of Canberra (1973 ) and the headquarters of the company Intelsat in Washington DC (1988).

The architecture of Andrews recalls some of Le Corbusier and is strictly functionally aligned. In the years 1958-61 show his buildings allusions to Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Andrews married 1958 Rosemary Randall, with whom he has four children.

Andrews is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
