John Ashley Griswold

John Ashley Griswold ( born November 18, 1822 in Cairo, New York, † February 22, 1902 in Catskill, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Ashley Griswold was born about seven and a half years after the end of the British - American War in Cairo in Greene County and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools and academies in Prattsville and Catskill. He studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1848 and then began to practice in Greene County. Griswold was 1856-1859 District Attorney in Greene County and 1863-1867 District Judge. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress Griswold was in the 13th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Thomas Cornell on March 4, 1869. Since he gave up for reelection in 1870, he retired after March 3, 1871 from the Congress.

After his conference time he went back to his work as a lawyer after. In 1871 he was elected Supervisor in the Town of Catskill. He took in 1894 at the Constitutional Convention of New York. On February 22, 1902, he died in Catskill, and was then buried in the Catskill Village Cemetery.
