John B. Emerson

John Bonnell Emerson ( born January 11, 1954 in Chicago ) is an American business lawyer and since August 2013, the United States Ambassador to Germany.

Life

At Hamilton College Emerson received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and the University of Chicago, he received his Juris Doctor.

Then Emerson worked in the legal department of the city of Los Angeles and was from 1978 a partner in the law firm Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg and Phillips.

He was appointed to the Executive Office of President Bill Clinton in 1993 and served him until 1997 as Deputy Assistant. In this role, Emerson coordinated among other conferences and organized the consent of Congress to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade - agreement of the Uruguay Round and the extension of the status of the People's Republic of China to the MFN principle.

Emerson was Chairman of the Los Angeles Music Center and board member for the YMCAs in the Greater Los Angeles. As President, he was responsible for the retail operations of the Capital Group Companies and directed the Capital Guardian Trust Company. He consulted including the Mayor of Los Angeles in trade matters and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

2010 Emerson was appointed by President Barack Obama as a member of its advisory committee for trade policy. He was before Obama's re- election as President of Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. Democrats.

On August 26, 2013 Emerson was accredited as Ambassador of the United States in Germany and successor of Philip D. Murphy.

Private life

John B. Emerson is married to Kimberly Marteau Emerson and has three daughters. His eldest daughter Jacqueline Emerson is an actress. Since August 2013 he lives with his family in Berlin.

Emerson began with twelve years to learn German (also to understand German conversations held between his father and his German-born mother to be able to ). During his time as an advisor to Bill Clinton, he was invited to spend the Friedrich -Ebert -Stiftung in Germany a few months.
