John B. Haskin

John Bussing Haskin ( born August 27, 1821 in Fordham, New York, † 18 September 1895 in Friends Lake, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Haskin was born about six and a half years after the end of the British - American War in Fordham (now a part of New York City) and grew up there. During this time he attended public schools. He studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1843 and then began to practice in New York City in 1845. In 1847 he was magistrate ( civil justice) in New York City - a position which he held until 1849. Between 1850 and 1853 he served as Town Supervisor in Fordham and worked 1853-1856 as Corporation Attorney.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1856 for the 35th Congress, he was in the ninth election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Bayard Clarke on March 4, 1857. In 1858 he was elected as an anti- Lecompton Democrat to the 36th Congress. He retired after March 3, 1861 from the Congress. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Expenditures in the U.S. Navy Department (35th Congress ) and Committee on Public Expenditures (36th Congress )

After his time Congress he resumed his activities as a lawyer. In 1863 he was Town Supervisor in West Farms. He died on 18 September 1895 in Friends Lake and was then buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City.
