John Balleny

John Balleny († 1857) was the English captain of the whaling ship Eliza Scott, for the English whaling company Enderby Brothers undertook 1838/39, an expedition trip to Antarctica.

On this expedition Balleny sailed with Thomas Freeman († 1839) and Sabrina in the Southern Ocean. The men registered a partial break-up of the pack ice surrounding the continent, discovered in February 1839 Balleny Islands and arrived at 64 ° 58 ' S, 121 ° 08' O also briefly within sight of the Antarctic continent. This area bears the name Sabrina Coast today. The team its Sabrina and lost on 24 March 1839 in a storm.
