John Baptiste Calkin

John Baptiste Calkin ( born March 16, 1827 in London, † May 15, 1905 ) was an English composer, organist and music teacher.

Calkin was taught by his father, the pianist, cellist and composer James Calkin and then worked from 1846 to 1853 as organist at St. Columba's College, Dublin. On his return to London he was organist at several churches as well as a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and later at the Croydon Conservatory.

His most famous work is the setting of the popular Christmas carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He also composed church music, hymns and anthems.
