John Bell (New Hampshire politician)

John Bell ( born July 20, 1765 in Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, † March 23 1836 in Chester, New Hampshire ) was an American politician and 1828-1829 Governor of the State of New Hampshire.

Early years and political rise

John Bell attended the local schools of his home. Between 1799 and 1800 he was a member of the House of Representatives from New Hampshire, and from 1803 to 1804 he was a member of the Senate of New Hampshire. After that, he was from 1817 to 1823 Advisor to the Government of his country before he held the Sheriff Chief of Police in Rockingham County was 1823-1828. In these years, the political landscape was in the United States in transition. The previously dominant Democratic- Republican Party alone split into two fractions, the followers of Andrew Jackson soon founded the Democratic Party. The other faction, who belonged to John Bell, National Republican Party called itself. This group was based on John Quincy Adams and became the forerunner of the Whig party. In 1828, Bell was selected as the candidate of Nationalrepublikaner against the incumbent Benjamin Pierce as the new governor of his state.

Governor of New Hampshire

John Bell took up his new post on June 5, 1828. In his one-year tenure, the Exeter Savings Bank was founded and introduced new experimental farming methods. In addition, throughout the state schools and the new production facility within the State of New Hampshire was created, also increased with the help of the state. In 1829, Bell was defeated by Pierce, who thus again took over the governorship. John Bell resigned from his post on June 4, 1829.

After his election defeat, Bell withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his private interests, including especially the agriculture belonged. John Bell died in March 1836. Together with his wife Persis Thom he had ten children. The son Charles (1823-1893) was in 1879 for a short time U.S. Senator and from 1881 to 1883 also Governor of New Hampshire. John Bell's brother Samuel (1770-1850) was from 1819 to 1823 Governor of that State and then from 1823 to 1835 U.S. Senator.
