John Bertrand Conlan

John Bertrand Conlan ( born September 17, 1930 in Oak Park, Illinois ) is a former American politician. Between 1973 and 1977 he represented the fourth electoral district of the State of Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

John Conlan, son of the famous baseball player Jocko Conlan, the common schools visited in Illinois. Then he studied until 1951 at Northwestern University in Evanston. After studying law at the Law School of Harvard University, he was admitted in 1954 as a lawyer. From 1954 to 1955 he studied at the University of Cologne and then in The Hague international law. In the United States, he worked as an attorney in Chicago. Conlan was also a member of the faculties of political science at the University of Maryland and Arizona State University. From 1956 to 1961 he was an officer in the U.S. Army. At the end of his service he had reached the rank of captain.

Political career

After his service in the army Conlan practiced in Phoenix as a lawyer. He became a member of the Republican Party. Between 1965 and 1972 he was a member of the Senate of Arizona. Between 1962 and 1972 he attended as a delegate of the local party conventions of the Republicans in Arizona. In the congressional elections of 1972 he was elected for the newly-created fourth electoral district of Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives. After a re-election in 1974, he was able to exercise this mandate between January 1973 and January 3, 1977 3. In 1976, he did not stand for re-election. Instead, he ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate, but was defeated in the Republican Primary with Sam Steiger another congressman, who then lost the actual election to Democrat Dennis DeConcini.
