John Bowers (bishop)

John Phillips Allcot Bowers ( born May 15, 1854 in Portsmouth, † January 6, 1926 in Norwich ) was a British bishop of the Church of England.

Bowers attended Magdalen College School and studied at St. John's College, University of Cambridge. In 1876, he received a Bachelor of Arts ( BA), 1880 a Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Divinity 1903 (DD).

In 1877 he was ordained a deacon in 1878 and was its consecration to the priesthood by Bishop Thomas Legh Claughton, respectively. Bowers now held various offices. In 1877 he was Curate of Coggeshall, Essex. From 1879 to 1880 he was curate of St. Giles, Cambridge, and from 1880 to 1882 curate of St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. From 1882 to 1885 Bowers Minor Canon was in the cathedral of Gloucester. Other offices included the Canon Missioner of 1885-1902, as well as the residentiary Canon of the Diocese of Gloucester from 1890 to 1902. Additionally, he served from 1885 to 1895 as librarian of Gloucester Cathedral. From 1902 to 1903 he was Archdeacon of Gloucester, and from 1903 to 1926 Archdeacon of Lynn. When the Bishop of Thetford, Arthur Thomas Lloyd, has been appointed as the new Bishop of Newcastle in 1903, Bowers was appointed as his successor. On June 29 was his episcopal ordination.

Bowers was a Freemason and belonged to the Union Lodge No.. 52 at. In 1920 he was appointed Provincial Grand Master for Norfolk. This office he held until his death. He died on January 6, 1926 and was buried in Porchester near Portsmouth, where his family owned a tomb. On November 26, 1926, he was established in honor of the Bowers Lodge.

Bowers was married and had children.
