John Bryson

John E. Bryson ( born July 24, 1943 in New York City ) is an American businessman and politician. After he was nominated on 31 May 2011 by U.S. President Barack Obama as the new Minister of Commerce of the United States, he held this office from 21 October 2011 until June 21, 2012.

Life

Education and career in the private sector

John Bryson earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 at Stanford University; it was followed in 1969 JD from Yale Law School. Together with some Yale classmates he called 1970, the Natural Resources Defense Council in life, a non-profit environmental organization, for which he worked as a legal consultant in the following years. He was also chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board and served from 1979 to 1982 as president of the California Public Utilities Commission, the regulatory body for public utilities in California.

As a result, Bryson went into the private sector. In 1984, he became Vice President of utility Edison International; In 1990, he went there on as Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO, a position he held until July 2008. From 2000, he also served as president of the company. He also sat as a director on the board of Boeing, the WM Keck Foundation, and the Walt Disney Company. Moreover, he was curator of Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology.

Bryson is a member of the International Advisory Council of the German - American elites Network Atlantic Bridge.

Appointment to the U.S. Trade Minister

On 31 May 2011 John Bryson was presented by President Obama as a future Minister of Commerce of the United States. He should succeed Gary Locke, the new U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, where he took the place by Jon Huntsman. Bryson was to be " an important part of the economic team " of the president, Obama said in a short speech.
