John Bull (composer)

John Bull (* 1562/1563 in Somerset, † March 13, 1628 in Antwerp ) was an English organist, harpsichordist and composer.

Life and work

John Bull has served as conductor and organist of the Chapel Royal under Elizabeth I in England. As a Doctor of Music, he first taught at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and then became a professor at Gresham College in London appointed. He undertook extensive concert tours through Europe. In 1613 Bull Kathedralorganist was in Brussels, then in 1617 in Antwerp, where he eventually died. Bull counted along with William Byrd to the most important English virginalists Tudor.

Some of his compositions are included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
