John Burton Thompson

John Burton Thompson ( born December 14, 1810 Mercer County, Kentucky; † January 7, 1874 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky) was an American politician who represented the state of Kentucky in both chambers of Congress.

Life

John Burton Thompson, who was born near Harrodsburg, initially graduated from the school before he studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice in his home town as a lawyer. He served as Commonwealth 's Attorney, a designation that corresponds to the Kentucky District Attorney of other states.

Policy

From 1829 to 1833 Thompson was a member of the Senate of Kentucky, in 1835 and 1837 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the State.

After the death of Congressman Simeon H. Anderson on August 11, 1840, John Thompson, at that time a member of the Whig, was elected to succeed him in the U.S. House of Representatives. He remained there for a re-election of 7 December 1840 to 3 March 1843. After a short break, he returned on March 4, 1847 back for another four years in Congress.

After 1852 exercised the office of Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, he moved into the U.S. Senate on March 4, 1853. Now after the demise of the Whig Party, he was a member of the American Party. His term ended on March 3, 1859.
