John Butler Smith

John Butler Smith ( born April 12, 1838 in Saxtons River, Windham County, Vermont; † August 10, 1914 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire ) was an American politician and 1893-1895 Governor of the State of New Hampshire.

Early years and political rise

John Smith visited the Francestown Academy and the public schools in Hillsborough. Then he began a successful business career. He was the owner of the Contoocook Mills Company and was in real estate and in Bankgeschaft active. Smith was a member of the Republican Party. In 1884 he was an elector in the presidential elections and between 1887 and 1889 he was a member of the senior staff of the Governor. In 1890 he became chairman of his party in New Hampshire.

Governor of New Hampshire

In 1892, John Smith was elected governor of his state. He joined his two-year tenure at January 3, 1893. During his reign he summoned some of his party colleagues in the work or the Forestry Committee of the State. After a fire in the mental hospital in Dover, in which 42 people lost their lives, these institutions were directly subordinate to the State Government to ensure better control. Until then, the county had the oversight of these institutions.

After the end of his governorship, Smith withdrew from politics. He devoted himself until his death in 1914, his business interests. With his wife Emma Lavender he had three children.
