John C. Carter

John Carpenter Carter ( born December 19, 1837 in Waynesboro, Georgia, † December 10, 1864 ) was a brigadier general in the Confederate Civil War.

Life

In the spring of 1861 he entered the Confederate army as a captain in the 38th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. At 6 to 7 April 1862, he led his men in his first major battle of the Battle of Shiloh, also on 8 October of the same year at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky and on December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863 at the Battle of Stones River, after which he was awarded several times for his bravery. After the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 and 20 September 1863, he and his men were used for border security. In 1864 he took over the command of Brigadier-General Wright and led his new troops in May 1864, Atlanta campaign. On 7 July 1864 he was promoted to Brigadier General and took over temporarily in command of the division of Major-General Cheatham in the battle of Jonesboro. He then returned to Tennessee back to prevent the advance of the Union troops.

Carter was mortally wounded at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, and died on December 10, 1864 from the effects of his injury.
